Herbs, Nutrition & Everyday Cultivation

The word apothecary traditionally referred to a place where medicines, herbs, and remedies were prepared and dispensed. At Eight Cranes, the Apothecary reflects a broader vision: supporting health through herbal medicine, nutrition, self-care, and practices that can be integrated into everyday life.
Whether through traditional herbal formulas, medicinal teas, nutritional support, food therapy, or practitioner-selected supplements, the goal is to provide resources that support healing, resilience, and long-term well-being.

Medicine, Harmony & Everyday Cultivation
The traditional Chinese character for medicine, 藥 (yào), contains the character 樂, which is often translated as music, harmony, joy, or musical instruments.
I’ve always been drawn to the poetry of that relationship.
Throughout my life, healing, music, movement, breath, and cultivation have often felt like different expressions of the same principle. When an instrument falls out of tune, subtle adjustments help it return to harmony. In a similar way, herbs, nutrition, acupuncture, Qigong, and other healing practices may help support the body’s natural tendency toward balance and regulation.
The Apothecary reflects that perspective. It is not simply a place where products are dispensed, but a place where traditional knowledge, nourishment, and everyday practices come together in support of health and well-being.
Perhaps healing is not about becoming something different. Perhaps it is about remembering the song that has been there all along.
What’s in the Apothecary?
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine is one of the foundational branches of East Asian medicine and has been used for centuries to support health, resilience, and well-being.
A small clinical dispensary is maintained at Eight Cranes for commonly used formulas, while customized recommendations may be sourced through trusted professional suppliers and dispensaries.
Recommendations are individualized according to a person’s health history, goals, medications, and overall presentation.
During herbal studies in Taiwan, I had the opportunity to work with freshly harvested herbs before they entered the dispensary. Farmers delivered Dang Gui roots in large barrels, where they were cleaned, sorted, and processed using traditional herb-cutting equipment. Experiences like these offered a firsthand glimpse into the journey herbs take from field to pharmacy and deepened my appreciation for the craftsmanship, quality, and traditional knowledge that support East Asian herbal medicine.
Nutritional Support
Nutrition can play an important role in supporting health, recovery, resilience, and healthy aging.
Recommendations may include dietary guidance, nutritional supplementation, and practical strategies intended to support the broader treatment plan.
Through our Fullscript dispensary, patients and community members may access professional-quality supplements selected with attention to quality, safety, and clinical appropriateness.
Some products may be available for general wellness, while others may be best selected through consultation depending on individual circumstances and health concerns.

Food as Medicine
Food has long been recognized as one of the most accessible tools for supporting health.
East Asian food therapy traditions emphasize seasonal eating, medicinal foods, nourishing broths, congees, teas, and daily dietary practices that may support well-being over time.
The Apothecary includes educational resources related to food therapy, seasonal nutrition, and practical ways of integrating nourishing foods into everyday life.

Teas, Tonics & Daily Rituals
Many people discover that simple daily rituals become meaningful anchors for health and well-being.
Whether preparing a medicinal tea, practicing Qigong, making a nourishing congee, or simply pausing for a moment of mindful awareness, small practices can accumulate into significant changes over time.
Quality & Thoughtful Selection
Products and recommendations are chosen with attention to quality, sourcing, safety, and clinical appropriateness.
Not every herb, supplement, formula, or dietary strategy is right for every person. Recommendations are made according to individual needs, goals, medications, health history, and preferences.
Whenever possible, the goal is not simply to recommend products, but to help individuals develop a deeper understanding of the tools they use to support their health.
Frequently Asked Questions
Continue the Journey
Healing is rarely the result of a single treatment, herb, or supplement.
More often, it develops through many small choices made consistently over time.
The Apothecary exists to support those choices through herbs, nutrition, food therapy, education, and practical tools that can be woven into daily life.
